As with many a popular video-game series, Bomberman had its inception in the 1980s. By 1983, Hudson Soft (株式会社ハドソン), previously an amateur radio shop, had sold over a million copies of Lode Runner, a video-game that turned out to be the precursor of the world-famous Bomberman series.

In 1985, Hudson released Bomberman, an arcade-style strategical where the player has to navigate through a block-based maze, destroying enemies and dead-ends with bombs. After proving to be a commercial success, the game spawned a number of successors and spin-offs building on its original concept.
